HovercraftA project by own design. Finally! The first pictures of the hovercraft under construction are
available. They give a nice impression of this sizable project. ![]() The hovercraft after the first stage; trial "flight" on a flat roof. ![]() The frame under construction (overview). Length x beam x height: 80 x 50 x 10 cm. What nutcase starts on something like this, and why?! The first idea came up when i was reading an old hobby magazine, which described a home built hovercraft. A documentairy on Discovery sparked my interst even more and a search on the net proved the idea to not being that crazy as i thought. After many weeks of pondering, schetching en trips to the hobby shop the first real drawings were made and building started. The frame is built out of trusses made from balsa boards (6 mm ). Also balsa strip wood is used (5 x 20 mm and 6 x 6 mm). ![]() Detail shot of the front side, with well visible the different trusses that shape the hull. ![]() Corner strips and bottom (2 mm ply) added. L x W center section: 20 x 50 cm. The frame was mainly constructed out of balsa to save weight, while the outside was covered with thin (0,8 mm) aircraft plywood. ![]() Detail of rear side. ![]() Bottom view.
